CS-RCS Basic
ComponentSoftware RCS (CS-RCS) is a powerful, inexpensive revision control system for Windows. Based on the widely used GNU RCS, it is fully integrated with the Windows Explorer, providing the most intuitive and easy-to-use configuration management and change control solution in the market. CS-RCS supports multi- platform workgroups, making it the ideal solution for sites that share common files on UNIX and Windows platforms.
CS-RCS handles all types of documents including program files, project files, resource files, HTML documents, MS-Word documents, pictures and drawings.
CS-RCS can use any file server or local drive to store the archive repository. Network connection to the archive repository can be LAN, corporate wide-area network (WAN), dial-in connection (RAS) and the Internet.
The basic edition of CS-RCS is used for general-purpose document revision management as well as for entry-level software configuration management. CS-RCS Pro includes advanced features needed for complex software and web development projects.
The basic edition of CS-RCS is free for single users !

I was looking for a shell extension for RCS, and CS-RCS will do the job (install it using the personal mode and the option to store the RCS archives in the local directory), but it brings along some bloat if that's all you need. The developers have tried to extend RCS to be more like CVS with concurrent editing capabilities and a central, network accessible repository, but most all of those features aren't available in the free operating mode. Pros: compatible and interoperable with GNU RCS; shell context menus for checking out/in files; GUI diff display. Cons: in free mode, there's no way to unlock a file; slows down normal file browsing because it has to scan the directory (a pop-up dialog will appear briefly); doesn't handle Windows line endings on RCS archive files - expects them to always be in UNIX format and then performs conversion on check-out/in; the GUI diff display, which is slow, takes getting used to - normally GUI diff tools use a side-by-side format, but this one doesn't; puts an icon on the desktop that can't be removed without editing the registry; response from support is slow. |

(1) DO NOT use delete files from within the RCS manager. Instead, delete the actual files from the RCS repository folder using Windows explorer. Deleting from within the RCS manager has UNPREDICTABLE results!
(2) DO NOT use 'mark a revision...' from the main menu. My experience is that this is very buggy -- I can reproduce an error where it marks files as modified after marking a revision, even though all files were up to date prior to marking the revision!!
This is good software, but some features are buggy. Avoid doing any of the above and you will be okay. |
